Leck named coach of international club side

PHIL Leck has been appointed coach of the Scotland Club International side.

But the Hawick chief has stressed the role will not affect his plans at Mansfield Park.

The Scottish Rugby Union made the announcement this week and Leck admitted it was a great coup to be filling the position.

He told the Hawick News: “I was invited to apply for the job and, although there wasn’t a huge number of people in for it, I was delighted to be appointed.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’s a big honour for me to be selected.”

Leck will take charge of two matches, against their Irish counterparts at Ayr and a French side across the Channel.

There is also expected to be between six and eight training sessions.

However, Leck, who took charge of the Greens last season, said it would have no bearing on his task at Hawick.

“The training sessions are on different days from here. It won’t affect my work at Hawick at all,” he said. “I wouldn’t have considered applying if it would interfere with my job here.”

Leck will be joined by Graeme Young, of Stirling County, who will be the assistant coach.

And while the focus may be on players from the top division, he has refused to rule out looking in the leagues below, leaving the door open for the selection of some of his charges at Hawick.

He said: “It’s going to be mainly Premier One players but there are opportunities for other lads at different levels.

“We’re looking to get a good squad together and that could include one or two of the top players in the National League.”

Former Greens star Roddy Deans has been named assistant coach of the Scotland Under-16 side.
