High river levels make it tough for anglers
ONLY five weeks to wait until the start of the new trout season. The salmon season started last week but opening day saw high river levels again. The Teviot is not known as an early season river but with the high waters there is always a chance a few fish will make their way upstream.
Salmon tickets which have to be purchased through the secretary will be on sale in the club rooms every Friday night until the end of March.
New season trout tickets are now available at all the usual outlets in the town.
Markle fishery hosted a fundraising competition last Saturday in aid of the Scottish still water team. Shane Kelly, Brian Taylor and I took part in the event which attracted 60 anglers from all over Scotland.
There had been a heavy overnight frost which resulted in traces of ice round the edges of all three ponds and it was very slippery underfoot. There was a surprising number of trout rising for most of the day even with the cold temperatures. The hot soup and pies were very welcome at lunchtime and helped to thaw out the hands. Shane and I netted six apiece which kept us among the top rods but just not close enough. Brian caught three.
Again the high river levels have spoiled the grayling fishing which should be at its peak at this time of year.
The local otters have been a great talking point over the past few weeks and also attracted media attention. It appears that they love to pose for anyone with a camera.
