AIDED by a Kevin Strathdee hat-trick, United sailed into the third round of the South of Scotland Cup on Saturday.

Despite atrocious conditions, which claimed the neighbouring match for Hawick Waverley, United turned on the style on the glue-pot-style pitch and emerged convincing winners as the scoreline suggests.

The Tangerines broke the deadlock with ten minutes of the match gone when Kevin Strathdee (pictured) got the first of his threesome with a well struck free-kick after Michael Moir had been fouled.

In the 22nd minute, United doubled their advantage as top marksman Kevin Strathdee hit home a shot following a Sean Owens free-kick.

Completely dominating proceedings, the Tangerines stretched further ahead before the interval, David Strathdee this time producing the scoring touch and firing a shot into the net from a Kevin Strathdee free-kick.

Early in the second half Biggar fell into further arrears. After ghosting past three defenders on a mazy run, Luke Shanley was brought down in full flight. And from the free-kick Owens netted goal number four.

United continued to run the show and Kevin Paterson made it a nap hand in putting away a free-kick from Kevin Strathdee.

Biggar were then hit for six when a move involving United’s two Portuguese players ended in Paulo Mendes tucking away a Hugo Santos pass.

Kevin Strathdee then completed his hat-trick, and put United into seventh heaven, as his bullet header from a Sean Clark pass flew past the Biggar keeper.

Summing up his side’s victory, United’s hat-trick hero Strathdee said: “Considering it was our first match in six weeks, I thought we played really well.

“Conditions were terrible but we adapted well and produced some good football. We battled hard as well and showed some great team spirit and it was great to get the win.”

United play Chirnside in the next round.
