Greens ‘pumped up’ as leaders come calling

HAWICK coach Phil Leck has described tomorrow’s encounter with Watsonians as “the most important game of the season so far”.

The league leaders travel to Mansfield Park having suffered just one defeat in the current campaign.

The Greens, on the other hand, are smarting from a shock RBS Border Cup loss to near neighbours Kelso last weekend. But Lancastrian Leck, who has suffered from illness for a large part of the week, is confident they will prove more than a match for their Edinburgh opponents.

He told the Hawick News: “It’s probably the most important game we’ve played all season and we’re looking forward to it.

“Last weekend was disappointing and the players know they let themselves down, but they’re pumped up for this week.

“As far as I’m concerned, every game is a ‘must win’. A victory tomorrow, though, would keep us up there and fetch the gap back on Watsonians.

“A defeat wouldn’t be terminal, but it would be pretty close.”

Leck shuffled his pack slightly for last week’s match, their first in over a month after internationals and cancellations left them kicking their heels.

But with a full squad to choose from this week he’s hoping the men from Myreside will come up against a team at their formidable best.

He added: “Watsonians are playing well and they’ve only lost once. For us to beat them we’ll have to be at our best and from what I’ve heard from the boys this week they are desperate to crack on and get the win.”
