Forrest targets title

BOWLS ace Julie Forrest will this weekend bid to reclaim the Scottish singles title at Falkirk.

The 44-year-old additional needs assistant at Wilton school is a five-times winner of the competition and will contest a semi-final tomorrow against Sharon Leitch (Balbardie), with the winner competing in Sunday’s final.

“I think it’ll be really, really hard,” said Julie. “Sharon’s playing in a lot of competitions near where she stays in Falkirk, far more than I will.

“She’s capable of beating me and has won titles, but I’ve been practising every day this week.

“It is just a matter of trying to get on top of her and then finding out if she will crack under pressure.”

Julie beat Kaye Cullinan (Headwell), Gail Lindores (Tweedbank), and Julie Sword (East Fife) en route to a dramatic quarter-final, where she recovered a 14-12 deficit by achieving a full house of four shots on the way to securing a 21-15 win over former world champion Margaret Letham.

“I normally play better at other carpets,” revealed Julie. “I’ve played at Falkirk already this season and did well, so I’m quite confident for this weekend.”

In March, Julie, of the Teviotdale club, will win her 50th cap for Scotland when she skippers the national team in the Home Nations tournament at Stanley, near Newcastle.
