‘FIRST STEP’ FOR RUGBY DEVELOPMENT IN TOWN

A NEW limited company is to be set up to take rugby forward in the town.

Directors will be put in place from each club and its first role will be to appoint a director of rugby to work for every club in Hawick.

The agreement was reached as part of the Hawick Rugby Discussion Paper, which was written by ex-Greens captain Brian Renwick.

Although it was initially rejected by a number of clubs, a recent meeting at Mansfield Park saw the formation of the new company accepted.

Terry Scott, who chaired the latest meeting, said: “It was clear that everybody had discussed the options presented by the paper and had agreed that the original paper would be the catalyst for moving forward.”

And Mr Renwick, who was charged by Hawick RFC to produce the report towards the end of last year, was similarly pleased with the progress.

He said: “I am delighted that we are eventually moving forward together.

“From all the feedback I received when writing the paper almost everyone said that we need to work together and the formation of the new company, with equal representation from all the clubs, is the first step in this process.”

It is understood the company would involve more cooperation between the town’s clubs with a view to saving money on things like buses, kit, energy suppliers, beer etc.

Mr Renwick added: “Resources are really tight in the town and as we have seen in recent weeks money is such a big part of the game even at club level.

“For all Hawick teams to have any chance of competing we need to make sure that we maximise any money coming into the game but also, by working together, look at ways to save money which is already being spent.”
