Father and son take Mansfield Park helm
RORY Bannerman is the new president of Hawick Rugby Club.
And the 48-year-old solicitor has thrown down the gauntlet for his two years in office as he attempts to lead the Greens back to the higher echelons of Scottish club rugby.
He told the Hawick News this week: “If we don’t get back up after the first year then it’s not the end of the world, but I would like to think we can do it. I’d like to think in my two years we’ll be in a position to challenge the so-called big guns in Scotland because Hawick is one of the big guns, we’re just reloading our ammunition.”
The appointment was made at Monday night’s annual general meeting, which was attended by 123 members.
It also saw record cap holder Kevin Reid named the club’s new director of rugby, while popular scrum half Greg Cottrell was selected as this year’s club captain.
It comes during a period of transition for the club, which has lost the services of a number of key players in recent weeks to sides offering financial incentives.
Graham Hogg and Michael Robertson have both joined Kelso, while former captain Bruce McNeil and young tyro Rory Sutherland have made the move to Biggar.
And this is something Mr Bannerman is keen to address, with the help of townsfolk.
He said: “The club is not in rosy financial health and we’ve got to look at bringing in new income streams and new ways of bringing money into the club.
“There are ideas afoot to ask members and the wider people who have an interest in Hawick and Hawick rugby to assist us in raising funds.”
Mr Bannerman also revealed plans to inject new life into the management committee, which is currently made up of ten members.
“Hopefully in the next five or six weeks we’ll have voted for a new, larger management committee made up of captains of industry and rugby brains,” he said.
“I think the committee of ten has to be expanded to allow the club to flourish.”
It is a family affair at the helm at Mansfield Park with Rory taking over from previous incumbent Alister Pow and his father Sandy coming in as his vice president.
