Drumlanrig bowl them over as 100 kids enjoy sixth finals day

THE sixth annual cricket finals day for local primary school kids was hailed as a success, with Drumlanrig taking the honours after a thrilling against-the-odds win over Denholm.

The title-winning pupils claimed the prestigious Margaret Johnstone Memorial Trophy after a superb display of fielding against final favourites Denholm, setting the seal on a glorious day for Drumlanrig school, which entered four teams into the tournament.

Buccleuch Park was the setting for the climax of a hard-fought season in which 12 teams from schools in the area – comprising around 100 young players – competed against each other on a weekly basis. Each team’s eleventh game was staged at the home of Hawick and Wilton Cricket Club to determine final league placings.

Since its inception in 2007, the tournament has encouraged many players to remain in cricket, with the best performers from the competition’s first few years now representing Hawick and Wilton at senior level.

The winning Drumlanrig side claimed the trophy and gold medals while the Denholm team was presented with silver medals. All other participating players received bronze medals. The award for best batter went to Denholm’s Evan Alexander, and best bowler was his team mate Ross Nichol.
