Cycling fans in for treat as Wiggo and Cav get set to tackle local Tour stage

LOCAL cycling fans will welcome the sport’s man of the moment, Bradley Wiggins, and sprint specialist Mark Cavendish to Denholm, Hawick and the Borthwick Valley for Stage 3 of the Tour of Britain (Jedburgh to Dumfries) this coming Tuesday.

Riders will proceed from Jedburgh (11am) to Denholm via the Dunion Hill road and enter Hawick on Weensland Road (A698) and onto the High Street. A sprint, the first on Stage 3 of the tour, will proceed along the town’s main thoroughfare before riders turn right and onto the A7 (south) at the Sandbed roundabout.

Thereafter, the race will proceed right at Martin’s Bridge onto the B711 towards Roberton and over the Alemoor Reservoir. A left turn at Tushielaw takes the route onto the B709, then another left at the crossroads adjacent to the Gordon Arms Hotel sees riders follow the A708 alongside Yarrow Water and St Mary’s Loch before going on to Moffat and Dumfries, where the stage concludes.

For those seeking the thrill of fast-paced racing, the sprint along the High St (11.28am) 10.5km into the stage is a natural attraction. This will present a rare opportunity to see sprint specialists such as Mark Cavendish up close.

Spectators who would prefer to see the whites of the eyes of riders such as Tour de France winner and 2012 Olympic time trial champion Wiggins would be well advised to adopt a vantage point on one of the mountain climbs. The first begins shortly after Roberton, at Borthwickbrae (11.43am), and the second after Tushielaw, at Turner Cleuch Law (12.07pm). The final climb begins its ascent at Grey Mare’s Tail (12.36pm), a mile on from St Mary’s Loch.

All spectators are advised to take up their viewing point in good time. All estimated times of arrival above are based on the fastest race time.
