TWO goals in each half steered Hawick to a merited victory in this clash of the Legions.
Hawick made the early running and edged ahead with a well-worked goal, Peter Gellaitry heading a Craig McCutcheon cross past the Jed keeper. In much need of points, Hawick kept their foot on the gas and went further ahead.
A good passing move pierced the Jed rearguard and ended in McCutcheon slotting away a cross from Gellaitry.
Hawick added to their tally early in the second half. In a counter attack, Steven Aries slipped a pass into the path of David Battle, who surged in to score. Jed hit back to reduce the leeway, but Hawick had the last say when Gellaitry’s solo run and cross was netted by Aries.
WAVERLEY had to settle for a point in an even tussle.
Newtown netted after just a minute. Michael Clark brought down Scott Leitch and Steven Swanston scored the penalty.
With 15 minutes gone Waverley’s Barry Shiel rifled a penalty over the bar. Four minutes later, however, the home side got on level terms courtesy of an own goal following a Kevin McGaughey corner.
Just past the hour mark Newtown edged ahead again through a Mark Tokely header. But with 10 minutes to go Shiel notched a deserved equaliser.
