Hawick golfers hoping to tee up Border League final win

Have your say

HAWICK are set to battle it out against Torwoodlee in the final of the 2012 Border Summer League Championship.

And they will be looking for revenge after losing to tomorrow’s opponents in the final last year.

The team, which comprises David Martin, Alan Ballantyne, Warren Renwick, Graeme Tinlin, Jamie Tinlin and Paul Johnson, along with youngster Gareth Renwick, cruised through rounds one and two with convincing wins over Cardrona and Eyemouth.

But their semi-final clash with Kelso last weekend at Torwoodlee proved a much tighter affair.

Hawick trailed 2-1 with three matches still left on the course, before Paul Johnson won his match 4&2 to bring the scores level.

With Martin one down with two holes to play, Kelso looked almost certain to progress to the final, as Graeme Tinlin threw away a three-hole lead, three-putting the last hole to earn a half-point.

However, a glimmer of hope appeared as Martin won the 17th to bring his match back to all square. And he rose to the challenge on the last green to sink a six-foot putt and earn the crucial half-point needed to book the Teries’ place in tomorrow’s final, which will be played at Peebles.

The format for the final will be foursomes in the morning session and singles in the afternoon.

The Hawick team would like to show their appreciation to Ross Williams and David Wilson for their support during 2012.
