Although making their exit from the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup, Royal Albert gave a battling display in this second round tie.

Speaking of his side’s performance, Albert manager Dean Shanks said: “Playing Spartans was always going to be a big test for us as they are a good Lowland League side and I think a lot of people thought Hawick would get a hammering. We had a game plan, though, and although we lost, I was pleased with our performance. Spartans got their goals early and late on during the first half and deserved their win but we gave them a game.”

Spartans broke the deadlock in the fourth minute when Dean Horribine scored with a header.

The remainder of the first half failed to bring about another strike until Keith Murray stretched the homesters’ lead with 43 minutes gone.

During a no-scoring second period, Spartans were reduced to ten men in the 70th minute when Murray was red-carded.
