A young Rovers side showed great improvement to come out on top in an entertaining match.

Rovers made the most of their early possession and came close to opening the deadlock through efforts from John Shankie and Gavin Brady. However, against the run of play, Gala took the lead after 20 minutes with a curling shot from the edge of the box which eluded Hawick keeper Jimmy Gillespie.

Despite this setback, the young Teries were pressing for an equaliser. And it came on the 35-minute mark in the form of a wonderfully executed free kick from 20 yards from the irrepressible Gavin Brady, whose dipping, swerving drive left the Gala keeper with no chance.

Hawick were still in the ascendancy with Andrew Tinlin forcing the visitors’ goalkeeper into a comfortable save following a strong run.

In the second half the match opened up and it was Rovers who seized the initiative by grabbing the lead within 10 minutes of the restart. Again it was Brady who did the damge with with another exceptional free kick. This time looping the ball over the stranded keeper from 35 yards out.

Rovers then took their foot off the gas and allowed Athletic back into the game. Goalkeeper Gillespie, who looked assured throughout, was called into action to palm away a 25-yard drive.

With Gala on the front foot it was no surprise to see them notch the equaliser. Gillespie getting a fingertip to a powerful effort, but it wasn’t enough to stop the ball from hitting the back of the net.

With 20 minutes remaining the game was now end to end, and after Gala had hit the crossbar, Rovers scored the decider. Latching onto a superb Ryan Law through ball, John Shankie showed a deft touch to clip the ball past the flailing goalkeeper.

With Gala pushing for another equaliser, Shankie almost grabbed an identical counter only to be denied by an excellent stop from the keeper.

Rovers managed to see out the remainder of the match for a deserved win, with Brady, Aaron Massie and John Shankie, in particular, impressing.
