WINNING their opening match 1-0 through a superb strike from Declan Hogg, Hawick Youth Under-13s kicked off their participation in Sheffield Rangers' six-a-side tournament in fine style.
And this superb victory, which also saw Teri keeper Bruce Connelly in great form, certainly raised a few eyebrows among the 54 teams invited to take part.
The Hawick lads continued to do themselves proud in their second match with a hard-fought 1-
1 draw with tournament favourites Greenhill JFC, who are an associate club of Sheffield United. Some dogged defending from Stewart Somerville and Kirk Ford kept the English outfit at bay for long periods but they eventually opened the scoring with a well-taken goal.
Back came Hawick, though, and the gutsy Aaron Swailes soon had the Sheffield side in a panic with a well-drilled leveller into the top corner. There was still more drama to come when, in the last minute, Connelly pulled off a top-drawer save at full stretch to much applause from the 3,000-plus crowd to earn the young Teries a highly-creditable 1-1 draw.
Match three saw Swailes finding the net twice – on both occasions being set up by the industrious Chay Caldwell – as the Hawick lads brushed aside Doncaster's Eden Grove by two goals to nil.
Although losing their next two group matches 1-0 and 2-1, the Teries' early form saw them safely into the quarter-finals, where they were again paired with Greenhill, who scored early on. Hawick, however, were still giving their all with Nathan McNally and Mason Clamp firing in shots that were well saved by the Greenhill keeper.
At this stage the English side were throwing everything at Connelly, who saved shot after shot, with defenders Hogg, Somerville and Ford playing out their skins with block after block. Starting to tire a little, the young Teries conceded a second goal in the closing stages but were given a standing ovation at the final whistle.
Greenhill went on to win the tournament, having only dropped one point and conceded one goal all day – against Hawick u13s.
