A good team effort by Hawick 2nds saw them securing victory at Selkirk on Sunday despite the Teries not scoring many runs.
On winning the toss, the Souters decided to ask Hawick to bat and disaster struck the visitors in the first over as Phil Mactaggart was bowled, playing on, from a wide delivery.
Worse was to follow when Hawick captain Neil Storey tried to see of
the pace of Fenton but had a big swipe and was cleaned bowled. The former was quickly followed by James Boyle in the same manner.
Jeff Thomson soon followed, also bowled, after which Craig Macdougall was bowled and then Stuart Anderson given out lbw – leaving Hawick on five runs for six wkts. Then, the in-form Allan Moffat joined Greg Wright and tried to put a respectable score on the board before Wright was also clean bowled.
Declan Solley then played safely and allowed Moffat to strike any loose balls, putting on a further 30 runs before being out lbw. His dad Cammy Solley came in and showed what you can do with a brisk 10 before being caught behind, leaving young Pearce Solley to help Moffat rescue what score they could. Moffat started to hit boundaries more often as Pearce Solley held his own against the pace of Fenton until he picked up his fifth wicket leaving Moffat undefeated on 61 not out and Hawick on 88 all out.
Selkirk's innings also got off to a bad start as Macdougall had their opener caught by Mactaggart in the second over. Moments later, Purves was bowled by an unplayable ball from Storey, who had Fenton plumb lbw. Macdougall then picked up his second wicket with a stunning catch low down in slips by C. Solley. Enter man-of-the-match Wright, who bowled with great purpose to take his best figures of 4-8 including the dangerous Fenton caught by a full-length dive from Mactaggart.
At the other end, Thomson only conceded five runs from seven overs, passing bat regularly. Storey then came back into the attack to finish the innings with a simple catch by Anderson to leave Selkirk all out for 50.
