A PETITION boasting more than 2,000 names in opposition to any threat to the Teviotdale Leisure Centre has been presented to the leader of Scottish Borders Council, writes Sarah Williamson.

A delegation of local campaigners travelled to council HQ at Newtown yesterday morning to hand deliver a list of 2,110 signatures, to enforce the message: ‘Hands off our leisure centre.’

George Brown, chairman of Hawick Senior Citizens’ Association, told the Hawick News: “We wanted to make known our very strong objection to any proposed closure of our Teviotdale Leisure Centre.

“Our petition has been signed by the many people who use this tremendous asset, which is essential to the wellbeing of the people of Hawick.”

Mr Brown said they were given assurances that the future of the Hawick facility was safe, but the petition was due to be presented to council directly afterwards.
