‘Crackers and Turkey’ were the order of the evening when president Mairhi Trickett welcomed Rotarians and their guests to a Christmas night at Thorterdykes Roadhouse earlier this month.

After a splendid seasonal meal, the company was entertained by some excellent singers and performers, with Joyce Tinlin first to hit the high notes with a beautiful song, which although entitled ‘Crackers and Turkey,’ contained a message of the true meaning of Christmas, spiritual rather than gastronomical!

Drew Johnstone, Bernie Armstrong and Michael Aitken then continued the evening’s programme with a mix of Christmas and traditional songs, mostly unaccompanied, demonstrating just what talent there is in Hawick.

Pat Sutherland joined Joyce in a perfect duet of ‘Celtic Christmas,’ and Jane Bannerman read two amusing stories about Nativity plays in the Yorkshire Dales.

President Mairhi’s vote of thanks included a special mention for past-president Bobby Cairns who persuaded the artistes to come along and make Rotary’s Christmas bash such a great start to the festive season.
