High school pupil Liam Short displayed his passion for poetry and won the right to perform at a national festival celebrating the works of Robert Burns.
Liam was named senior Burnsian after gaining first place in the S5-6 recitation category, while Jasmyn Davidson, a pupil at Stirches Primary School, was a winner in the primary 6-7 section, as a record turnout of participants entered the Borders Association of Burns Clubs’ regional finals in the town.
As a result of their success, the pair will represent the region in the Robert Burns World Federation Schools Festival in Aberdeen on April 21 and 28.
Erin Boyle, of Stirches, finished as runner-up in the primary 4-5 category, while high school duo Sally Thomas and Robert Scott came second in the S3-4 section.
Robin Dodyk, convenor of the Borders Association of Burns Clubs’ Schools Competition, said: “Without a doubt the talent on show this year was the best ever.”
