THE Baptist Church’s new associate pastor, Mike McLeister, is hoping to strengthen links with the local community.

The 39-year-old will be sharing his work between Hawick and Selkirk, where he has been for the past eight years.

A former engineer, Mike’s work took him to Selkirk before a complete career change.

He said: “I think I reached a stage where I felt I wanted to do something more with my life.

“I was involved in sales management in engineering, so it was a big change.”

The church has a congregation of around 30 on Sundays, while the recently renovated ‘Well’ facility, located nearby, caters for all ages, with a strong emphasis on youth and activities such as pool, computers and games.

Since the retiral of former pastor Alex Morrison, the church has been in the hands of interim pastor Bob Baxter, while Mike, who is married with three children, will join him in promoting their good work.

And he admitted he can’t wait to get started.

He added: “The church here has been brilliant in the way it has reached out to children, young people and adults and I will be looking to support that.

“We’re here to serve the community as best we can. We’re not a secret society that does things on a Sunday morning that nobody knows about.”
