On Saturday, November 1, the 4th (Borders) Battalion Old Comrades’ Association gathered at the war memorial in Wilton Lodge Park to lay a wreath in memory of all members and friends.

The ceremony was especially for those who on this day in 1944 liberated the islands of Walcheren in the Netherlands, thereby opening the port of Antwerpen to allow supplies to the allied advance into the heart of Germany.

After the short service, some 30 ‘Friends of the Fourth’ attended their 68th reunion dinner in the Buccleuch Hotel. The company included Nicol Park (4th KOSB) and Jack Webster (6th KOSB), both war veterans and both 95 years old.

After a fine meal, the company was entertained by Bert Armstrong and Michael Aitken with songs old and new. The dinner was chaired by John Aitkin, himself a veteran of the Malayan Emergency of the 1950s.

At the end of the night the company left each other determined to meet again in November 2015.
