ALEX Salmond has refused to commit to any reduction in rates for struggling town centre businesses.
Mr Salmond said that wiping out business rates for small businesses had been a ‘lifeline’ to some during the recession.
But he conceded that more needed to be done.
He told the Hawick News: “I know the Borders towns very well and in the rural areas some of the town centres you just want to see them revived and we have to find a way to do it,
“This is not a problem specific to here or Scotland for that matter, it’s about the change in retail habits but nonetheless there’s always a policy to change that and we need to find that policy.”
