A Hawick resident is celebrating after scooping a cash windfall from her local bank.
Maureen Richards went into the Bank of Scotland’s High Street branch on Monday after receiving a letter telling her that she’d won a prize in a savers’ special draw. And branch staff were delighted to tell her that she’d won £1,000.
There were more than 485,000 registrations for the first draw – showing its popularity with savers across the UK. Three people took a top prize of £100,000. Mrs Richards is one of 100 UK savers to receive a £1,000 and 1,000 savers picked up a £100 bonus.
To take part in the prize draw, savers choose a savings product from the Halifax range, earn the interest associated with that account, and can register for the draw for a chance to win one of the top prizes. Customers must maintain a savings balance of £5,000 or more in order to be eligible for that month’s draw.
Mrs Richards explains: “We recently opened a couple of savings accounts with Bank of Scotland and with Halifax. When we were in the branch we saw the poster advertising the draw and signed up. It was such a wonderful surprise when I found out that I’d won! We’re looking forward to spending the money to hire a cottage to spend some time away with my family, who we don’t see very often – it’s a lovely treat for us!”
Mike Godsman, Hawick branch manager, said: “We really hoped that we’d have a winner in the first draw. And it’s lovely timing for Mrs Richards for her win to come just before Christmas.”
Simon Kenyon, HBOS director of savings, said: “The prize draw was designed to reward positive saving habits, and making winners like Mrs Richards better off this month does just that.
“We are very proud to have brought this innovative scheme to the UK market.”
