Marshall raises fears over state of wall

The wall to the rear of the sorting office has been battered by severe flooding over the last two months.

Local flood group chairman Stuart Marshall says the “fast-deteriorating” wall to the rear of the Royal Mail sorting office in St George’s Lane must be treated seriously.

And he’s calling on Royal Mail and Scottish Borders Council to resolve a dispute over its ownership.

Mr Marshall added: “I don’t know how much more floodwater this wall can take, but while this issue goes back and forth between the council and SEPA it will just deteriorate further. You can’t begin to imagine what damage would be done if it was to collapse. I’ve forwarded my concerns to SBC and SEPA in the hope that they can sort our their differen-
ces.”

Scottish Borders Council said the wall does not relate to, or affect, any council asset and is the responsibility of the owners of the property, while Royal Mail said it is investigating ownership of the wall and is talking to SBC about the matter.
