Local sporting heroes to be focus of museum exhibition

FIRST year pupils at the high school will this weekend unveil an exhibition dedicated to the town’s sporting heroes.

Youngsters have since January been working on a project centred around Vision 2014 and the 2012 Year of Sport, carrying out research and using their creative talents to form a display that will be shown at the museum from tomorrow until mid-August.

The exhibition will feature portraits and biographies of 18 of Hawick’s great sportsmen and women from the past and present, as well as a timeline of many more who have made great achievements in the world of sport. Interviews with future sporting stars will be played on a laptop as part of the same exhibition.

Teacher of social subjects Lee Thornborrow worked on the project alongside Nichola Wylie, Martyn Call, and Tracy Hastie, while their fellow staff Gail Andison and Susan Oliver oversaw proceedings.

Ms Thornborrow said: “The purpose was to help kids learn new skills, such as researching, organising, and contacting the various people they could contact by telephone and email. Our class had Rory Hutton in for the afternoon so they could write his biography.”

The exhibition runs at the museum until August 19.
