Volunteers set to be given flood warning presentation

THE Hawick Volunteer Flood Group – formed as a direct result of the devastating floods of 2005 – is to meet early next year to forumlate an immediate response to a flood warning.

The meeting, which will take place in the town hall on Monday, January 7, at 7pm, is being promoted by the community council, whose chairman Andrew Farquhar told the Hawick News this week: "When flood warnings go out there is normally three hours in which to act. It is therefore important that if you are to be a volunteer you should have some knowledge of how the group will function. To this end, there will be a presentation by the council's emergency planning officers and the coordinator – all of whom will outline the action to be taken after a flood warning."

Mr Farquhar added: "Experience has shown that life would have been much easier for many people if such a group had been up and running during previous floods in the town."

Meanwhile, at a recent Flood Group meeting, Stuart Marshall was appointed group coordinator, with Marion Chrystie deputy co-ordinator, and five area co-ordinators named as: Gerry Aprile, Zandra Elliot, Michael Graham, Lindsay Nichol and Norman Walker.

It was agreed that the aims of the group would be to: Audit the flood risk areas once a flood warning has been issued; check on and assist the vulnerable; help the general public and support the recovery phase.
