Union convenor hits out at council

LOCAL Unite union convenor Eck Barclay has written to his local councillors expressing concerns over changes to pay and conditions at the local authority.

As revealed last week, Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has controversially agreed to implement the changes for new employees from the start of this month.

The decision has received widespread criticism, with claims SBC is creating a ‘two tier’ workforce.

Mr Barclay (pictured), a janitor at Burnfoot Community School, described the lack of consultation with unions as ‘offensive’ and ‘draconian’.

In a letter to councillors Alastair Cranston, Stuart Marshall and Zandra Elliot he has questioned their decision to support the move and expressed concerns over the effects it will have on staff and the community.

“My members, who are loyal hard working employees of the council, who give loyal service to the public, are an unhappy workforce who despair at what is going to be thrown at them next,” he said.

“They are being pushed to their absolute limits both personally and professionally and you should be aware of their increasing anger.”
