Teries on weather alert

GALE force winds and heavy rain are set to batter Hawick.

A Met Office Amber warning is currently in place across the region, with up to 60mm of rain forecast on already saturated ground – the equivalent of an average month’s fall in a day.

Scottish Borders Council chief executive Tracey Logan told the Hawick News: “The Met Office has been forecasting this weather since the latter part of last week so we are prepared. We have additional staff and resources available, and our emergency response team will continue to monitor the situation.

“Due to the predicted amount of rainfall, localised flooding is likely to affect roads. Gales of up to 60mph are also expected, which could result in trees and branches being blown over. I’d urge everyone to take extreme care when travelling.

“We will be staffing our emergency control centre overnight to make sure any weather-related incidents are responded to in a speedy manner.”

All schools in the region are open as normal today and are expected to open tomorrow. SBC will continue to monitor the weather forecast and publicise any changes regarding school transport if required.

General updates will be issued on SBC’s website at www.scotborders.gov.uk
