The works starting next week in Victoria Road will last between six to eight weeks.
The project, being carried out by Scottish Borders Council, will see the construction of a filter lane for cars leaving the Common Haugh and will allow motorists to access Wilton Path without having to sit behind cars waiting to get onto Commercial Road.
There will also be some resurfacing and repair works carried out at the same time.
Commenting this week, Councillor Stuart Marshall said: “Once complete this will be a great benefit to the area and will lessen congestion. Obviously there will be some disruption but hopefully this will be kept to a minimum.”
