Scout group crying out for volunteers

HAWICK Scout Group has issued an urgent appeal for volunteers.

The organisation currently boasts around 70 youngsters, aged from six-years-old to 18, through the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts.

But the demand is much greater and can’t be satisfied by the current volunteer numbers.

Margaret Lancaster, Scout Group treasurer, said: “We’re desperate for volunteers to help with the kids and it’s getting really worrying.

“There’s no chance of us folding altogether as we struggle on to keep things going and the volunteers we have do a great job.

“But there are over 100 young people all over the Borders desperate to join and can’t because of a shortage of adult volunteers.”

It was on April 22, 1909, when a group of local men met in the Council Chambers to discuss the possibility of starting the Scouts – and it was a meeting that would spark the beginning of over 100 years
of the organisation in the town.

And Mrs Lancaster couldn’t underestimate the contribution the group made to the individuals and to Hawick.

She said: “I’m in touch with a lot of people who are as old as me and some who are older and they say the Scouts gave them a great start in life.

“There are some who have gone on in life but who send us donations as a thank you for their time in the Scouts and I think that speaks volumes.” There are currently leaders for all the groups, but volunteers are required to help support them.

“There has never been a better time to volunteer,” said Mrs Lancaster. “There are flexible arrangements that allow volunteers to help as and when they can and to fit it around their other commitments.

“There are many ways in which people can give their time to help Scouting whatever their gender, age, abilities and skills through a large number of different roles.

“These range from working directly with the young people, to management or administration roles.

“No matter what peoples’ interests are, or what skills they have, or how much time they have available, there is a role for them in today’s Scout movement.
