School transport cancelled as snow sparks pupil safety concerns
HEAVY, persistent snow is set to hit Hawick today (Monday) and into tomorrow with conditions quickly deteriorating.
The bad weather has resulted in all school transport being cancelled today, and parents are being advised that only pupils who can walk to school should do so due to the amber warning that is in place.
A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: “Pupil safety is our primary concern. There is also the consideration that is needed for pupils getting home later today in potentially worse conditions.
“The schools which are closed or partially closed today are listed on the council’s website and parents have been informed by text message. All schools have staff in place who live locally.”
The council has also actived its resilient schools scheme, whereby teachers have been allocated to a school within walking distance of their home, thus avoiding the need for blanket school closures.
The SBC spokesperson continued: “This means that teaching and support staff living within 1.5 miles of a school will walk to their designated school and be ready to undertake duties wherever possible
“Parents are being reminded that it is ultimately their decision as to whether to send their child to school.”
Meanwhile, council gritting teams have been out since 6am this morning, but the local authority is warning drivers drivers that conditions are particularly hazardous and motorists should slow right down.
