Review to bring town’s CCTV into sharp focus
A REVIEW is to be conducted into the town’s CCTV system.
Investigations are to take place by Lothian and Borders Police and the local authority following a number of complaints about how effective the cameras are.
Scottish Borders Council inspect the cameras on an annual basis, but concerns have been expressed that it is simply not up to scratch.
At a meeting of Hawick Community Council this week, Helen Ford said: “I spoke to the police about the vandalism to the flower boxes on the High Street and they said if the cameras were working properly then that would have helped a lot to catch those responsible.
“How can these people be brought to justice if the CCTV isn’t working properly?”
The mantle has been taken up by Hawick and Denholm councillor Stuart Marshall, who said it was time something was done to tackle those intent on causing mayhem in the town.
“Nobody wants to talk Hawick down and the problems we’ve got are not unique to Hawick, they are throughout the country.
“But since the last community council meeting I’ve taken three calls from members about the flower beds.
“It’s no wonder they’re getting frustrated because the excellent work the Hawick in Bloom committee is doing is being vandalised every week,” he said.
“It really is important that we know exactly how effective the CCTV system is. I also think that whilst the public know that the police can’t be everywhere these days, surveillance cameras are an effective tool in the provision of reassuring the public that potential criminals will be caught.”
However, a spokesperson for Scottish Borders Council defended the system.
A statement said: “The council can reassure the public that the cameras are of the standard and quality required.
“While further investment in our CCTV systems might be desirable, it is considered unaffordable in the current economic climate.
“At this time it is not anticipated that any enhancement will be made to the current CCTV system in Hawick for the forseeable future.”
