Reprieve for drug dealer as he’s spared jail by sheriff
A SHERIFF has told a drug dealer that the simple option would be to send him straight to prison.
Gordon Donald was stopped in a taxi while a passenger and found in possession of heroin with a street value of up to £920.
The 35-year-old of Renwick Terrace, Hawick, pleaded guilty on indictment at Jedburgh Sheriff Court to being concerned in the supply of heroin.
The court was told that police were responding to a 999 call about an ongoing disturbance at a house in Renwick Terrace on March 3 but found nothing when they arrived.
But officers spotted a taxi leaving the street and pulling up in nearby Rosebank Road with Donald and another in the back seat.
He appeared to be hiding something and after he was searched police found a bag of brown powder while a set of scales were found in the back seat of the taxi.
Police also seized two mobile phones and £103.50 in cash.
Sheriff Donald Corke said it would be easy for him to send Donald to prison for dealing in class A drugs.
But he said he was willing to defer until August 24 to allow a Drug Treatment and Testing Order assessment to be carried out so that all sentencing options could be considered.
