Rae directs deadly duo to fourth consecutive rally championship title
Kevin Rae and David Bogie on way to winning Scottish Rally Championships
KEVIN Rae became part of the first duo to claim four successive Scottish Rally Championships when he navigated driver David Bogie to victory in last weekend’s Ian Broll Merrick Stages.
The pair were crowned champions following the penultimate event of the national rally card, which comprised four stages within the Galloway forest.
Scottish rallying’s team to beat covered 19 miles across four stages in a total time of 39 mins 39 secs in their Mitsubishi EVO 9 – eleven seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Going into the last stage, Bogie and Rae were neck and neck with nearest rival Euan Thorburn, but the Duns driver was forced to retire his Ford Focus World Rally Car with gearbox-related problems.
“It’s a shame to win a rally because of someone else’s problems,” said Rae, of Southdean. “Euan was going well before that, but these things happen. David drove very well and set a steady pace and it was enough to give us the championship. So, we’re chuffed to bits.”
Thorburn blasted through the opening two stages faster than Bogie and Rae. But, the reigning champions took the honours in stage three – while Thorburn’s car developed gearbox problems - and secured the title.
The final round of the 2012 MSA Scottish Rally Championship is the Colin McRae Stages, based in Aberfeldy in Perthshire, on October 6.
