Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations muted in local area
CELEBRATIONS in Teviot and Liddesdale for this year’s Queen’s Diamond Jubilee were relatively low-key in comparison to events staged throughout the rest of the Borders.
Figures obtained from the council show that the area, one of five within the council’s boundary, gained grants totalling £4,458 of a total pot of almost £60,000.
The costliest projects in the area took place at Wilton Dean Hall and Denholm Public Hall, but neither warranted anywhere near the £2,500 obtained by a number of projects elsewhere in the Borders. The committee at Wilton Dean received £1,000 towards a flower bed and open-air party that cost just more than £1,200.
At Denholm, a variety of attractions formed a picnic celebration that cost £1,800 and was offset by a council grant of £1,490. Drumlanrig Out of School Club held a children’s jubilee jamboree, fully-funded by a grant of £195.
Hawick Senior Citizens’ Association Social Club staged a special lunch for around 40 elderly people at the Evergreen Hall. The club received £300 towards the £340 cost.
Elsewhere, Artbeat Studios’ celebration day at the Border Club cost £790, all but £60 of which was funded by a grant. Teviothead Village Hall landscaped and paved an area within its grounds to form seating and a flower bed. The council granted £500 towards the £600 project.
Burnfoot school’s high tea was fully funded at £128, while events by Drumlanrig school attracted a bill of £184 that was offset by funding of £115.
