‘Prison inevitable’ for man who hid knife in his sock

A drunken man, found with a knife hidden in his sock, has been jailed for six months.

David Adamson told police he had the seven-inch long kitchen knife for his own protection.

The 24-year-old, who was described as a prisoner in Edinburgh, appeared on indictment at Jedburgh Sheriff Court and admitted having a knife in Mart Street on October 5.

Depute fiscal Kate McGarvey told the court how police received an anonymous call after Adamson was seen at a bus stop, “drunk, and shouting at passers-by”.

When officers attended, he tried to reach into his pocket, and was handcuffed.

Adamson told police he had a knife concealed in his sock.

“It’s not for anything, it’s for my own protection,” he said.

Ms McGarvey described it as “a seven-inch kitchen knife” with a blade of three-and-a-half inches, and a four-inch handle.

Solicitor Rory Bannerman, defending, said the knife belonged to his client’s uncle.

“He had been at his uncle’s house and had taken some alcohol during the afternoon,” explained Mr Bannerman.

“His uncle picked up the kitchen knife and waved it about in an aggressive fashion.

“Concerned about that, he took it from his uncle and left the house,” continued Mr Bannerman.

“What he should have done then is put it down a drain, or contacted the relevant authorities,” he added.

“He should not have put it down his sock.”

Mr Bannerman said Adamson had gone to get a taxi home, when he was found in Mart Street with the knife.

“He was shouting and swearing, but there was no question of the knife being produced,” he explained.

Sheriff Donald Corke backdated the six-month jail term to October 8, when Adamson was remanded.

“Prison is inevitable, given your record, and the fact that you had this knife concealed, and said that it was for your
own protection,” he told the accused.
