Pretswell appointed Quins boss – but Kiore’s not finished yet

FORMER Greens back row Timmy Pretswell has made a return to rugby as coach of Hawick Harlequins, the club he captained and served as a player for 18 years.

Pretswell, 52, steps into the Quins hotseat as a replacement for Ricky Kiore, who left the post following a year in charge after accepting a new role at a local bank.

Outgoing coach Kiore will continue to make himself available for Quins in a playing capacity but will review his participation once he begins his new job.

Pretswell, an ambulance driver, says he will aim to take the Baker Street club “as high as possible”.

He told the Hawick News: “I was quite flattered to be offered the job. I have long connections with the club, and Hawick rugby is still held in high esteem. From being a young player with the Quins, then captain, and now manager – I’ve come all the way with the club. I’d like to take them as high as possible. They have a good bunch of young lads that just need some direction and discipline to be a reasonable side.”

Having served Quins from 1977 until 1995 as a player, when he made around 50 Greens appearances, Pretswell was at Mansfield Park for 15 years as a team manager, until the end of the 2010-11 campaign.

While his career undergoes a renaissance, Kiore, his predecessor, says his own playing days are far from over. “It’s quite a big commitment to carry on playing while I have this new job, but I’m not retired yet,” Kiore said.

Quins’ first training session of the new season is open to all old and new players on Tuesday, July 3 at Wilton Lodge Park from 7pm.
