Hawick MP Michael Moore has welcomed another drop in unemployment locally as figures show hundreds more people in work compared to this time last year.
Figures released on Thursay show a drop of 377 people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in Mr Moore’s constituency compared to July last year. This means that the JSA claimant rate in the Borders stands at 2.9 per cent with 1,338 people in the Borders receiving the support.
Commenting, Mr Moore said: “I am glad to see that compared to last year, hundreds more people are back in work in the Borders.
“The UK Government has had to take some extremely difficult decisions to put the economy back on track since the financial crisis, but these figures show that local businesses are growing in confidence and creating jobs.
“There is still a lot more to be done and there are still far too many Borderers out of work. I will continue to work with the local Council and businesses to ensure local people receive the support they need to break into the job market.”
