Mayfield folk left stranded by new Sunday bus route

MAYFIELD residents could be left stranded at weekends unless a transport firm introduces consistency and common sense to its local services, says the town community council.

First Group took on the responsibility of running services in the area following the withdrawal of Jedburgh bus company Munro’s. The national firm plans to continue the Stirches service seven days a week, with the route to take in Mayfield on every day except Sunday.

Community councillor Danny Richardson, who lives in the Mayfield area, expressed his concerns at a recent meeting with First representatives at the Evergreen Hall.

“There are a lot of older people here for whom the bus is the only chance to get out,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of them and they’ve said it’s the only way they can get up and down the town. It’s not everybody who can afford taxis or to run a car.”

Mr Richardson also called for a revised itinerary for the separate Burnfoot and Stirches buses travelling on the same stretch of road between Morrison’s and Wilton School

He said that the two hourly services ran on that stretch within five minutes of each other, meaning the latter bus invariably had few passengers to collect.

“It’s common sense,” he said. “All we need is someone from the bus company to listen to us. They said they would look into it.”
