ROXBURGH and Berwickshire Citizens Advice Bureau has helped locals to the tune of more than £2million.

However, the number of people experiencing debt problems has increased.

Figures released at this week’s annual general meeting revealed the client financial gains for 2011-12 stood at £2,161,974.

This covers all areas of advice, including: increased benefit income, consumer issues, debt, employment problems, accessing charitable support for one-off grant payments, housing, legal, tax and utility problems and travel.

The figure is gathered from all of the CAB officers in Roxburgh and Berwickshire, which takes in Duns, Eyemouth, Hawick and Kelso.

However, an overwhelming majority of clients were dealt with from the Hawick area – 579 in Hawick and Denholm and 617 in Hawick and Hermitage. In comparison to 432 in East Berwickshire, 304 in Kelso and district and just 33 in Galashiels and district.

The total number of issues dealt with in 2011 rose from 16,889 the previous year to 18,507.

A large chunk of these involved debt, which went up from 7,403 cases in 2010 to 7,997 last year; while benefits 4,932 (4,082); employment 1,505 (1,456); housing 976 (792); all showed an increase.
