Jobless stats show drop on last year

A TOTAL of 410 people in the Hawick area claimed unemployment benefit last month, according to figures recently released by Scottish Borders Council.

The claimant count, revealed as part of the Scottish Borders Economic Development monthly bulletin, shows that the number of people registered out of work has decreased in each part of the town compared to 2011 – apart from in the Newcastleton and Teviot area, where the number has risen from 29 the previous year, up to 36 in December 2012.

In other areas of the town, figures from last month show there were 121 claimants in the Burnfoot area compared to 138 the previous year; 96 in Hawick central compared to 110; a drop from 103 to 96 in Hawick North; and a decrease in the West End from 64 claims down to 61.
