Heavy snowfall prompts weather alerts

SCOTTISH Borders Council is monitoring the weather as heavy snow continues to affect the region this morning (Tuesday).

An Amber (be prepared) warning for snow – covering the western part of the Borders – is in place at the moment, while a Yellow (be aware) warning for snow is also in place for the whole of the region until 10am today.

Around 5cm of snow has fallen on low ground, with 10-20cm on higher ground. Gusts of wind, reaching 50-60mph, have led to drifting snow overnight, and ice is affecting roads.

SBC gritting teams have been out since 3pm yesterday (Monday) and are currently back out to check primary routes and paths.

Any updates regarding impact on schools will be communicated through the group-call system, and will be posted on www.scotborders.gov.uk and SBC’s social media feeds. Parents are also being advised to listen to local radio in the morning for information on school transport.
