WHILE others will be enjoying rolling eggs and feasting on chocolate on Easter Sunday a group of walking women will be putting the final touches to their fund-raising challenge.

And there will certainly be no thoughts of rest and relaxation as they attempt to complete the Border Abbeys Way over three days in aid of the Border Holiday Group (BHG).

The team includes Rhona Graham, Nicola Borthwick, Fiona, Lisa and Audrey Reid, Ann Welsh, Julie Torbet, Julie Riddle, Eileen Douglas, Karen Bell (who is raising cash for the Injured Jockeys Fund), Tina Mayfield, Linda Watt and Lesley Casson.

Rhona’s brother Russell is set to travel on a trip to Austria later this year.

The 44-year-old attends the Katherine Elliot Centre and this will be his first trip away with the group, who organise biennial holidays in Europe for sick and disabled people.

Rhona said: “It’s a ten-day trip and he’s really excited. He’ll have a fantastic experience while seeing another country that he’s never been to.

“It costs £1,200 each so that’s why we decided to do some fund-raising. Half will be going to Russell for his trip and the other half to the group.”

The walk will see them leaving Hawick for Selkirk on March 29 and carrying on to Melrose, some 23.5 miles. The following day they take on the 18-mile stretch from Melrose to Kelso. And their challenge is completed on Easter Sunday as they return from Kelso to Jedburgh and back to Hawick (23 miles).

They are, however, no strangers to the hills and countryside and have been blazing a trail locally for some time now.

More recent outings have taken them around the Stobs Circular route and past the Will Ogilvie Cairn.

And Nicola admitted they were all eagerly anticipating the challenge ahead.

She said: “We do a lot of walking as a group. It’s a great social thing but this will be something completely different.

“It’s a long time to be on your feet, but we wanted to make it a challenge and hopefully, because it’s for such a good cause, we’ll raise plenty of money.”
