Graham and Finlay star as South select visit birthplace of rugby

TWO up-and-coming local rugby talents made their mark at the birthplace of the sport for an historic match last week.

Ross Graham and Finlay Simpson lined up against Rugby School after the South of Scotland team was reformed to play for the first time in 12 years.

Graham captained the side in a warm-up at Dollar Academy and in last Friday’s match, where South were edged 36-13 by Rugby in a closely-contested affair.

“I was quite proud to pull on the South jersey,” he said. “It was an honour to be captain, getting the team going on the pitch and keeping everyone right off it.

“We coped well after they scored first and we managed to gel together.”

Team mate Simpson added: “It’s nice to know you can play well against a team like that. Folk from all over the world go to Rugby School to play.”

Rector Alan Williamson said: “The Hawick boys involved were a credit to their school, clubs and town, both in the game and throughout the tour.”

Graham and Hawick YM player Matty Douglas were this week named in the Scotland under-18 squad that will convene for a two-day training camp later this month.
