Former abattoir site becomes a dumping ground once again

FLY-tippers have returned to an area of Burnfoot with a vengeance.

Although it was understood the matter had been addresses, the former abattoir has once again become a dumping ground with numerous items strewn across the site.

A site visit was held earlier this year where owners Kepak met with Scottish Borders Council officials and representatives from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).

It was hoped the area would be secured, preventing fly tippers from accessing the ground.

But local councillor Stuart Marshall is furious this is not the case and revealed he had received calls from the public who have witnessed cars entering and leaving the site, dumping their rubbish.

He told the Hawick News: “I am very annoyed and disappointed that this issue has been allowed to get out of hand, if the owners of this site were to have a mess of this proportion on their doorstep then I am sure that they would have acted much quicker to have it tidied up.

“The whole area is in a disgraceful state and I am furious that the owners have allowed this to happen.”

Councillor Marshall said he had been back in touch with Kepak and SBC with a view to securing the site and making it safe.

He added: “At the moment the place looks like a landfill site.”

The plans for the future of the site include moving hundreds of tonnes of soil and creating a huge bund at the entrance in order to block the access.

But before this happens the area must be tidied up first.

It is understood both the SB Wardens and police have been asked to step up patrols in the area.

Anyone caught fly tipping can face fines of up to £40,000 or six months imprisonment.
