Farmfoods make move to Woolies

FARMFOODS is to move into the former Woolworths store on the High Street.

The Hawick News can reveal that a deal has been done which will see the supermarket chain more than treble in size by relocating to the vacant premises across the road.

And it is understood the move, which was brokered by local property developer Gavin Stevenson, could create up to 12 new jobs.

A spokesperson for Farmfoods said yesterday: "We're delighted that we are making this move into larger premises in the town centre and a building warrant will be submitted in very early course."

Woolworths closed its doors earlier this year with the loss of around a dozen jobs. And the company's demise left a gaping hole in the High Street.

But local councillor George Turnbull, who was heavily involved in the relocation, said he was delighted that the store would now be occupied.

He said: "This is absolutely fantastic news, especially in the current economic climate, that a company of this size sees a future in Hawick and is keen to invest in the town."

A similarly delighted Mr Stevenson hoped the move would act as a catalyst for further investment, particularly in the Commercial Road area of the town.

He added: "Given the recent bad news, this is a great story for Hawick and hopefully provides confidence to others who are considering our retail units in Commercial Road."

The move is expected to take place "imminently". It is unclear what the plans are for the current Farmfoods site are.
