Ex-councillor urges public to back plans at ‘iconic’ park

RECENTLY-RETIRED councillor Jock Houston has urged those opposed to elements of the Wilton Lodge Park redevelopment plan to embrace a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for large-scale investment in the town.

Plans for a £3million project – to be partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund – aimed at overhauling the park have been met with a degree of criticism.

But Mr Houston (pictured), who stepped down from his role in the Hawick and Denholm ward in May, said it was important for local people to back them.

He said: “The Friends of Wilton Lodge Park have invested time, money and enthusiasm in working up ideas to restore and regenerate the park.

“It is greatly to be hoped that the town will be behind a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to inject money into its iconic attraction. If the bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund fails because the town does not get behind it, it would be a kick in the teeth for the hard-working volunteers.”
