Drink driver tells police: ‘What an idiot I’ve been’

A DRINK-DRIVER was fined £200 and put off the road for 18 months.

First offender Maureen Lewis, 44, of Roxburgh Drive, admitted driving a car in Mart Street on June 3 with a breath/alcohol reading of 92 mcgs – the legal limit being 35.

Police were contacted after a member of the public saw the accused’s car strike a bollard.

“They found her sitting on the pavement, under the influence of alcohol, with the car nearby, and she confirmed she had been driving,” explained procurator fiscal Morag McLintock.

Lewis told police: “What an idiot I’ve been.”

Defence solicitor Rory Bannerman told Jedburgh Sheriff Court: “She had no intention of driving, but was concerned for her son, and went to see if she could find him.

“She reversed and struck the bollard, and was seen by a member of the public, who told her to wait, which she did.”
