Demand to stub out school smokers
CONCERNS were raised this week over the number of youngsters smoking outside the high school.
The matter was brought up at a meeting of Hawick Community Council on Monday night.
Danny Richardson said: “Walking down past the high school the amount of kids standing there smoking is unbelievable and I think it’s getting worse.
“There must be at least 20 of them right in front of the main entrance to the school and then further round on the bridge and in the Haugh. It’s brazen.”
The law states that it is illegal to sell cigarettes to people under the age of 18, but the legal age for smoking is 16.
It is unclear whether the youngsters referred to are pupils at the high school or students at the nearby Borders College.
Smoking is not permitted in any Scottish Borders Council building or in the school grounds.
High school rector Alan Williamson said: “Obviously the school would never condone smoking. As a health promoting school, we do everything possible to discourage smoking.
“The senior management do try to patrol the whole of the school grounds and often outwith as well, but students have always been adept at finding places to smoke, which is highly regrettable.”
