Dad doubles efforts to help hospital that saved daughter’s life

A DAD whose daughter’s life was saved with state-of-the-art equipment funded by the Sick Kids Friends Foundation (SKFF) is preparing to run a half marathon to raise funds for the charity.
Rory Bannerman, a local solicitor and president of the town’s senior rugby club, has also organised a horse racing and charity dinner to fund-raise for the charity that acts in support of the Edinburgh-based hospital.
On Sunday, he will take part alongside daughter Eilidh in the Jedburgh half marathon.
More than a decade ago, Eilidh, now 20, took ill during a holiday in Perthshire. She was rushed to Perth Royal Infirmary, where it was confirmed she was suffering from meningococcal septicaemia – a type of blood poisoning.
Mr Bannerman, 48, said: “It was touch and go for a while for Eilidh. The staff recognised that she needed specialist treatment at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and an intensive care team was sent from the hospital to save her.”
In 1997, SKFF invested £52,000 in a retrieval system that was key in the treatment of Eilidh.
“The equipment funded by the charity saved our daughter’s life – it’s as simple as that,” said Mr Bannerman. “It is hugely important for us to raise the profile of our event and collect money for the charity to which I will be eternally grateful.”
The charity dinner will take place on November 10 at Hawick Rugby Club and tickets are on sale for £45.
