Councillor’s hopes over BGH bus service support

A NEW bus service from Hawick to the Borders General Hospital has been launched on a trial basis.

The new provision is being laid on by Scottish Borders Council – in partnership with the Reshaping Care Change Fund and The Bridge Community Transport Initiative – following complaints that there was a lack of a direct service for local residents, causing problems with appointments and visiting times.

The new bus timetable starts on Monday, and will operate four times a day from Monday to Friday, on a set route linking Wellogate, Mart Street and Burnfoot, with the Community Hospital and the Borders General Hospital.

Councillor Stuart Marshall told the Hawick News: “I just hope that townsfolk support this service, because it’s an issue that keeps coming up at various forums and community councils.”

MSP John Lamont added: “This is undoubtedly good news, The lack of public transport options in and around Hawick has always been a hindrance to local residents, many of whom do not have access to any other method of transport.”

But also stressing that townsfolk must use it or lose it, he added: “I would encourage any residents needing to travel to BGH to use this service while they can. Only then will we be able to convince the council of its continued need, and ensure that it is made into a permanent service.”

The trial is initially running until August 9.
